Punctal Plugs
Effective Relief for Itchy and Burning Eyes.
If you struggle with dry eyes, your eye care team at Oklahoma Eye Surgeons may determine that punctal plugs are the best solution for long-term moisture retention. These tiny devices are placed in your tear ducts, where they help you retain your natural tears.
Our clinic offers punctal plugs with a range of durations, allowing us to customize your treatment based on your unique needs.
Learn More About Punctal Plugs
Punctal plugs work by blocking the “puncta” in your eyes; these are the tiny openings that drain tears from your eyes. By slowing fluid drainage, punctal plugs help keep your eye’s surface moist and comfortable, providing much-needed relief.
Your Punctal Plug Options
There are many types of punctal plugs, each of which has unique benefits. Depending on your eye health, lifestyle needs, and the severity of your dry eye disease, Oklahoma Eye Surgeons may recommend temporary plugs, semipermanent plugs, or Lacrifill Canalicular Gel.
Temporary (Dissolvable) Plugs
Made from a soft, absorbable material, these plugs naturally dissolve over time, typically lasting anywhere from a few days to several months. Temporary plugs are often used as a trial option to determine if punctal plugs provide sufficient relief before placing a longer-term solution.
Semipermanent Plugs
These plugs are made from medical-grade silicone or acrylic and are designed for long-term relief. Unlike dissolvable plugs, Semipermanent plugs remain in place until removed by your doctor. This option is often ideal for patients who need continuous tear retention for lasting comfort.
Lacrifill Canalicular Gel
This cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel conforms to the unique anatomy of your tear ducts, providing effective tear retention for up to six months. Lacrifill canalicular gel offers extended relief from dry eye symptoms without the risk of dislodgement (which could occur with traditional plugs).
